About Book of Monsters
Book of Monsters is a team-based destruction survival game on Roblox developed by Cosmic Workshop where a squad of Humans fights against giant player-controlled Monsters by jumping on glowing self-destruct buttons on each Monster's back. Created in June 2016, it has accumulated 101 million visits, 624K favorites, and won the 2019 Bloxy Award for Best Gameplay - recognizing it as one of Roblox's most original competitive designs.
The game teaches its premise through a tutorial: a guide NPC is captured by the Minotaur, and new players must jump on the Monster's back to rescue them. It is an apt introduction to what sets Book of Monsters apart - Human players need both platforming skill and coordination, because Monsters actively fight back with stomp attacks, knockback blasts, and constant movement. Chaining multiple Humans on the button simultaneously deals damage faster, making teamwork the skill ceiling. The core roles play out like this:
- βοΈ Human Team - coordinate with teammates to reach the self-destruct button on a moving, attacking Monster; Hammers provide an active weapon option alongside the platforming route
- πΊοΈ Monster Role - play as a giant creature and use destructive attacks to throw Humans away from your back button; win by surviving until the round ends
- π Juggernaut Mode - every two rounds with six or more players, up to two Monsters become Juggernauts at 1.5x size with extra health; only level 10+ players can be selected
- π Monster Skins - each Monster has Common, Rare, Legendary, and Master collector tiers, plus holiday variants for Halloween and Christmas events
- β³ Seasonal Events - Halloween brings Candy rewards and holiday monster skins; Christmas brings Candy Canes and their own holiday variants
- π Lobby Obby - a hidden obstacle course in the lobby offers a challenge for players between rounds
Four currencies give the economy variety: Coins (primary), Dux (secondary with its own uses), Candy (earned during Halloween events), and Candy Canes (earned during Christmas events). XP levels up your character, with level 10 required for Juggernaut eligibility. Cosmic Workshop continues seasonal updates through at least October 2025.
With eight monsters - Knittens, Meltzer, Insquidious, Minotaur, Casa Loco, DoodleBoard, LlamaBot, and Reptire - each requiring multiple collector badges, Book of Monsters offers more long-term progression than most party games on the platform, sitting alongside games like Natural Disaster Survival for players who enjoy team survival with active environmental threats.
