The Plaza

The Plaza is a social hangout game on Roblox created by solo developer Widgeon in January 2016, making it one of the oldest continuously loved experiences on the platform with over 124 million visits and a remarkable 854K+ favorites. It is a direct spiritual successor to Gmod Tower - the legendary Garry's Mod social hangout that later became Tower Unite on PC - rebuilt within Roblox as a boardwalk-and-plaza environment on an unnamed island.

The core experience has no mandatory objectives. Players join a server, explore the open island layout, chat and interact with others, and take part in mini-games scattered across the environment. The plaza area features shops, a beachfront, social spaces, and game zones all on a single open map. A 50-player server cap - unusually high for the genre - reflects the original design philosophy: a crowd is part of the atmosphere.

The current version is subtitled "Nostalgic Edition," indicating it is a preserved build of the classic experience rather than an actively updated live-service game. Widgeon has since focused on Tower Unite for PC, leaving The Plaza largely in its original state. Despite very low concurrent player counts today, the game commands deep community affection - its 92/100 approval rating from 228K+ ratings speaks to the emotional attachment players have built over a decade.
